People are living longer than ever before and by 2030, 1 in 6 people will have reached the age of 60 and over. A longer life brings many opportunities as well as challenges. As people age, they often face declining health and mobility, resulting in isolation and loneliness. Robot assistants for the elderly have gained increasing attention as a potential solution to address the challenges of an aging population. These robots are designed to provide support and companionship to the elderly, especially those who may be living alone or experiencing physical and cognitive limitations. Here are some key features and functions of robot assistants for the elderly:

What is Human Augmentation?

Human augmentation (a.k.a. Human 2.0) seeks to enhance and exceed the natural cognitive and physical abilities of people through integrated technology. There are many applications of human augmentation with devices such as cochlear implants to increase sensory perception and orthotics that enhance motion or muscle capability. Some researchers are even working on data-connecting devices that would link the human body to visual/text-based sources of information. A decade or so ago, most people probably would have associated a “power suit” with corporate attire. The notion of a metal “skin” with motors to enhance human strength far beyond normal capability once science fiction, now is “science fact.” In this article, we take a closer look at the evolution of wearable and remote-controlled robots, and how an iterative design process has enabled incremental improvements in the pursuit to create bionic humans.

Robotics are changing the face of almost every industry, with the manufacturing sector appearing to benefit the most. In fact, some people refer to this age as the “fourth industrial revolution,” and for a good reason. If the current statistics are anything to go by, then you’d be right to say that we are in the age of robotics. On a global scale, data shows that a whopping 1.3 million industrial robots have made their way into factories.
